Flourless Apple, Egg and Cheese Waffles
These flourless apple, egg and cheese waffles are a little sweet, a little savory and so easy to make. With only three main ingredients, they are perfect for those busy days when you need a quick toddler friendly breakfast, snack, lunch or even dinner.
My 3-year-old finishes these so quickly! The grated apple adds a touch of natural sweetness, while the cheddar gives the waffles crispy, cheesy edges. Since there is no flour in the batter, the texture is soft and eggy inside rather than fluffy like a traditional waffle.

1 large egg
⅓ cup finely grated apple, measured before squeezing (about ½ small apple)
⅓ cup finely shredded mild cheddar cheese
Pinch of cinnamon, optional
Directions
- Preheat and lightly grease a mini waffle maker.
- Place the grated apple in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and squeeze it very well to remove the excess liquid.
- Add the egg, squeezed apple, shredded cheddar and optional cinnamon to a small bowl. Mix until evenly combined.
- Divide the mixture between two mini waffles. Add one portion to the waffle maker and spread it out evenly.
- Cook for 5–6 minutes, or until the waffle is golden, set and releases easily. Cooking time may vary depending on your waffle maker.
- Let the waffle rest for about 1 minute before carefully removing it. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
- Cool to a safe temperature before serving to little ones.
Notes
- These waffles will be soft and eggy inside with crisp, cheesy edges. They will not have the fluffy texture of a traditional flour-based waffle.
Be sure to squeeze the grated apple well. Excess moisture can make the waffles soft and difficult to remove.
For the skillet version, add 1–2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour or finely ground oats so the pancakes hold together when flipped.
Cut and serve in an age-appropriate shape and size for your child.
